Exhibit files from the Western Illinois University Art Gallery, which was curated by Mitchell Gaul from 1978-1982, by Dick Law from 1982-1992, and by John Graham from 1992-2009 and beyond. The Gallery is part of the College of Fine Arts and Communications. It began as the College Art Museum and was housed in the “Arts Building” – now called Garwood Hall – from 1917-1959. In 1959 the Gallery changed its name to University Art Gallery and moved into Brown Hall, where it remained until 1980, when it moved to its present day location in the old Heating Plant/Power Station. The Art Gallery has three exhibit spaces, or “Galleries,” referred to as Gallery “A” “B” and “C;” some folders in the collection have notations indicating which gallery or galleries an exhibit was housed in.
The collection primarily consists of notations, correspondence, clippings, flyers, memos, and other accompanying paperwork for exhibits displayed in the Art Gallery, as well as images of artwork on slides, photographs, negatives, CDs, and floppy disks. Other materials include office files such as annual reports, which include lists of exhibits over the previous year; conference and lecture files; and a few files documenting visits to other galleries. The files are arranged chronologically, with the exception of the end of box 7 and all of box 8, which contain a mix of files from 1994-2005. Materials are in their original folders. CDs, floppy disks, photographs, negatives, and slides from the collection are housed separately in the Vault Room, as indicated in the contents list.
As of 2009, the Art Gallery’s WIU Webpage also includes information about past exhibits dating back to 1998.
